Homework Policy

Research shows that, for the vast majority of students, homework does not increase academic achievement. There is also little evidence that homework develops time management skills. Parent involvement, on the other hand, has been shown to have a significant impact on student achievement, particularly at the primary grades.

At GLC, we are committed to making decisions based on evidence. Therefore, our policy for homework is to promote daily practices that encourage life-long learning (e.g., reading) and to encourage interactions among family at home. Parents will find that homework is less about completing worksheets, and more about engaging with activities that promote thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.

At a minimum, all students are expected to read each and every night. Expectations range from 20 minutes in the primary grades to 30 minutes at the upper grade levels. Reading is defined broadly and may include a parent or family member reading to the child.
