Parent Involvement & Volunteers

Introduction

Parent involvement is critical to the success of GLC. Parents are encouraged to be active participants in their children's education through support at home, communication with teachers, participation on school committees and associations, and volunteering. Here are just a few ways that parents can be involved with their child's education at GLC:

  • Home-school communication
  • Student assemblies and programs
  • Volunteering and chaperoning
  • Parent-teacher conferences
  • Committees and associations (PTSA, SSC, ELAC)

Parents can also be involved at the District-level by participating in the District Advisory Council (DAC) or District English Learner Advisory Council (DELAC).

Home-school Communication

It is important to maintain open communication with your child's teacher. Some examples of important communication items include absences, health needs, academic concerns, and more. Teachers may be reached by email or phone (outside of class time). Our teachers also use ClassTag (an app similar to Class Dojo) to message parents.

Parents are also encouraged to download the VUSD app to keep abreast of activities and events.

Student Assemblies and Programs

Student recognition assemblies are scheduled every 6-8 weeks. Parents will be notified in advance if their child will be receiving an award at one of our regular student assemblies. Other programs include:

Volunteering

There are three steps to become a volunteer at GLC. They are:

  1. Go to vusd.org/volunteer
  2. Complete a volunteer application. These are available in English and Spanish from the front office and below (English only)
  3. Pass final clearance. The school will verify safety and security clearances for all prospective volunteers, including Megan's law clearance and principal approval.

Fingerprinting is encouraged for all parent volunteers, though it is not required for all volunteer positions. Parent volunteers who have not been fingerprinted may only be with students in the presence of a school staff member. Only parents who have been fingerprinted and fully cleared may be alone with a group of students.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are held twice each year. Teachers meet with all parents during Fall conferences, and on an as-needed basis for Spring conferences.

If you would like to meet with your child's teacher, we request that you please contact the teacher in advance to set up a meeting. This protects teachers' time during the instructional day, and ensures that they are prepared and fully present to meet with you regarding any questions or concerns you might have. To set up a meeting with your child's teacher, you may call our office at 559-730-7768 or contact the teacher directly.

Committees and Associations

For parents who want to participate in an even greater capacity, the following groups provide excellent ways to increase knowledge and involvement:

  • School Site Council (SSC) - The SSC consists of parents, teachers, classified staff, and the principal. Officers are elected for 2-year cycles and meet six (6) times each year. All SSC meetings are open to the public. Click INTERNAL LINK here to learn more about our SSC.
  • English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC) - The ELAC meets five (5) times each year and is open to all parents. The council is committed to improving school programs and effectiveness for English Learners.
  • Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) - The PTSA holds either board or association meetings each month. All meetings are public. The National PTSA mission is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
